Garage Doors in Port Hope, OntarioA door that liftsthe way it should.

Homes in Port Hope rely on the garage door more than any other entrance, and when it hesitates, grinds or stops halfway, the whole morning slows down. We look over the springs, cables, rollers and opener together, explain what has worn in plain words, and leave the door running the way it did when it was new. We also come out to Port Granby, Morrish, Osaca, Wesleyville and Zion.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 64%Older homes

About 64% of homes in Port Hope were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Extension springs are common on older doors, and they should carry a safety cable through the middle so a broken spring is held rather than flung. Adding those cables is a small job the technician checks for and offers on any older door he services.

  • 72%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 72% of homes in Port Hope (2021 Census).

Households in detached homes often have several remotes, a keypad and a phone app between family members and their cars. We keep all of them programmed to the opener, replace the ones that have failed, and explain how to add a new one when a car changes hands.

Keypads on the outside of the garage let the kids in after school and let a neighbour water the plants while you are away. Programming a new one, changing the number or replacing a weathered unit is quick work for us.

Garage Door Safety Inspection

A tenant mentioned the door is louder than it used to be. From the driveway it looks fine, but on closer inspection the hinges near the floor are streaked orange and one roller wobbles as it turns.

How a visit goes

Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there. That is why a section replacement includes checking what the damage did to everything connected to it.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.

    Set a time

We arrange a visit around your day and confirm the technician's arrival. If the door is stuck open, tell us so we can plan for it.

  2. 2 of 3

    A full walkaround

Nothing is replaced until the whole door has been inspected. We photograph wear where useful so you can see what we are describing.

  3. 3 of 3

    Done and demonstrated

The door is repaired, run through its cycles, and demonstrated to you. We leave the old parts if you want to see them.

Asked and answered

What gets lubricated, and what is left dry?

The moving metal-on-metal points get a light coat: the spring coils, the hinge knuckles, the roller bearings and the pins at the bottom brackets. A silicone or lithium product made for doors is used, then the door cycles a few times to carry it in. The tracks are the exception; they are cleaned and left bare, since a slick track lets the wheels skid and holds grit against them.

Can I replace just the one roller that looks bad?

One roller can be changed on its own, and sometimes that is the sensible stopgap after a wheel breaks. The better result comes from a full set, because the other wheels have done the same number of cycles and are close behind, and mixing new with old, or nylon with steel, leaves the door running unevenly and sounding different on each side. A matched set also lets the technician set every top fixture and check every hinge in one pass.

How many hinges does a typical door have?

Count the joints between panels and multiply. A single door usually carries two edge hinges and one centre hinge per joint, so a four-panel door has three joints and nine hinges. A double door adds one or two more centre hinges per joint to keep the wider panels flat. The top panel uses adjustable top fixtures rather than hinges, and the bottom corners use bottom brackets, which are different parts.

What is a safety cable, and does my door need one?

A safety or containment cable is threaded down the inside of each extension spring and fixed at the hanger behind and the bracket in front. It carries no load in normal use. If a spring snaps, the cable keeps the broken halves in place beside the track. Every extension-spring door should have one each side, and the industry's inspection checklist asks for it. Doors installed decades ago often have none; they are added with the new springs.

Does a heavier door need a more powerful motor?

The door's springs carry its weight; the motor only guides it. A properly balanced door of any size moves with modest effort, which is why balance is tested first. That said, a large double door, an insulated steel door or a solid wood door is matched to a higher motor rating so the operator works well inside its range, and a top-section reinforcement bracket spreads the pull across a wide or flexible door.
